Join with Pastor Derek and explore the Gospel of Mark’s  account of the week before the Crucifixion as recorded in Mark 11-13. The study is on Wednesdays at 11:00am beginning   February 24th and will continue through Lent and end on March 31st. We are trying a new online format for this study. The meetings are on Zoom and will be recorded so those who can’t attend in person can participate. The session videos will be posted each Thursday.
An outline of each session will be sent out each Monday so you can prepare ahead of time if you would like. Anyone who participates in person or by watching a session video is encouraged to engage with Pastor Derek with any feedback and questions that arise by email and he will respond in person and at the beginning of the next session!

Session 2- On the Fig Tree and The Temple

Preparing for Session 2:
Begin with Prayer-
Read Mark 11:12-25

In the Gospel of Mark the well known action of Jesus called the Temple Cleansing is bracketed by the interesting story of the Cursed Fig Tree.
The Cursed Fig Tree-   Mark 11:12-14 and 20-25
Old Testament Background-
  • Read Jeremiah 8:11-13 and 24:1-10-  How do these passages inform the story of the Fig Tree in Mark?
  • How might Jesus’ action with the Fig Tree relate to his actions in the Temple?
The Temple Cleansing-             Mark 11: 15-19
Old Testament Background-
  • Read Leviticus 5: 1-10. Why are doves sold and who are they for?
  • Read Isaiah 56 and Jeremiah 7:1-11- Jesus quotes verses from these two passages in vs. 17. How does this set the stage for the Chief Priests and Scribes response in vs. 18?
